"Allocated" just means the distillery makes far less than people want, so it's rationed to shops in small quantities. The bottles people chase — Pappy Van Winkle, the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, E.H. Taylor, Weller — rarely reach an open shelf. Here's how you actually land them:
- Become a known, repeat customer. Allocation is offered to regulars first. The shop that knows your name calls you when the bottle lands.
- Chase single-barrel store picks. Private barrels bottled under a store's label — retail-priced, one-of-one, and often better than the hyped releases.
- Enter the ABC Vault lottery in Florida. The statewide route to the most allocated releases.
Skip secondary-market "used-car" pricing — a patient relationship gets you the same bottle at retail.
